I did a quick little portrait session with the bro Briggs not long ago in Sydney. Briggs is an indigenous rapper, record label owner, comedy writer and actor, from Shepparton in Rural Victoria, and is signed to the Hilltop Hoods label, Golden Era.
So lately there's been a few incidents in Australia with black face and a few other race related things, and the topic of racism has been very much in the public eye. Briggs has unintentionally become an activist type/spokesperson against black face and racism, by calling out the people involved publicly, via social media, and creating a discussion about racism in Australia.
With myself growing up as a black kid in Australia, you learn to shrugg off the casual racism you experience and try and block it out and fly under the radar. So as you get older, you start to understand how much courage it takes to call out the casual racism, especially when it's so entrenched in a society that people actually claim it's not there and get angry at you for calling out the racism.
So the idea was to put Briggs in front of the flag of his people, the original owners of Australia, just to solidify his place as a spokesperson for a younger generation who's voice isn't always heard. Proud to say that I'm the first person to do a photo shoot with my buddy Briggs, in front of his peoples flag.
